CEF Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF)

CEF AFIF is a funding program established by the European Commission to advance the development of alternative fuels infrastructure across the EU. This funding initiative aims to support in the area of:

  • Road and public transport: Construction of charging stations for electric vehicles, hydrogen refueling stations for trucks and buses
  • Ports/maritime transport: Onshore power supply (OPS) for maritime and inland waterway vessels and hydrogen refueling stations for vessels
  • Airports/Aviation: Electrification of ground handling equipment, pre-conditioned air systems (PCA) and electric ground power units (GPU)

The primary goal of the program is to establish a comprehensive network of alternative fuel infrastructure throughout the EU, which will allow alternative fuel vehicles to move more freely and reduce the carbon footprint of the transportation sector.

The CEF AFIF program was launched in 2021 as part of the existing CEF Transport Program, which is dedicated to improving the infrastructure networks of the EU in the areas of transport, energy, and digital communication. This program offers financial support to initiatives that will help develop a more sustainable, interconnected, and competitive European economy.

Through the CEF AFIF funding program, the EU hopes to promote the use of alternative fuels in various modes of transportation, such as passenger cars, buses, trucks, and ships. The program supports both infrastructure projects that facilitate the deployment of alternative fuel vehicles and initiatives that promote the adoption of alternative fuels in transportation. Ultimately, the CEF AFIF aims to foster the development of an alternative fuels market in the transportation sector, reducing the EU’s reliance on fossil fuels and improving air quality.
